World demand is centred on the white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). This mushroom accounts for nearly 40% of the world production. Mushrooms are grown on compost which must be discarded after 2 or 3 crops (called flushes).
Mushroom growing is high volume / low margin business. The mushroom industry is comparable to the Poultry Industry in so far as there is a huge dependency on energy for the heating and chilling during the growing process. The instability of the fossil fuel market in combination with increasing legislation surrounding the disposal of Spent Mushroom Compost (SMC) is significantly impacting profit margins.
The bhsl FBC technology is ideal for combusting difficult bio fuel sources such as SMC. However prior to combustion the moisture content of the SMC must be reduced 68% down to 40%. There are a number companies who produce driers capable of achieving this, however for the process to be viable only low energy drying systems can be used.
Should you have a mushroom application please contact bhsl for more information.
